 of students The students of Grade 9 have mastered certain vocabularies, expressions and structures. They also have the abilities of self-teaching and working in groups. Most of them are willing to express their opinions in English.

 It is the fourth part in the unit. If students can learn it well, it will be helpful for them to learn the rest of this unit. Besides, today’s topic is about smile, which is closely to daily life, so it’s easy to arouse their interest.

  To learn some words and language points, such as difficulty, simply, universal,dining hall, adapt to... To understand the main idea and seek more information of the passage .

 Ability

 To improve students’ reading skills. Guide students to use mind map to understand and retell the text.

 To realize the importance of smiling and learn to smile at the difficulties. Project

 Teaching procedures

 Step1: Lead-in and warm up 1.Ask students a question: Are you happy today? 2.Show a picture of a sad boy . Then ask a question: What’s wrong with him?

  To arouse students’ interest in the topic and encourage them to think actively.

  Step2: Fast reading I have divided the passage into three parts. Ask students to read the article as quickly as they can and match the main ideas of each part.

 Help students get the general idea of this lesson.

  Step3:Careful reading 1. Read para.1-para.3, fill in the blanks with the words from the passage. 2. Read para.4-para.5,answer the questions: How did Sam adapt to the new environment? 3.Then read para.6-para.7, answer the questions: What did Sam gain from the smile?

 To fully understand the detailed information of the passage and develop students’ reading ability.

  Step4. Post-reading 1.Retelling. Ask students to retell the passage according to the mind-map. 2.Discussion:

 Question1: What did the smile bring to Sam? Question2: The power of a smile. Question3:When I_________? _____smiles give me________.

  Retelling the article is an output, and it can evaluates how well the students learned in this lesson.

  Step5.Emotional education I send an acrostic poem about smile to students.

  To help students learn the power of smiles, and be optimistic and brave.

 Homework

  Consolidation homework: draw a mind-map of this lesson. Extension homework: write down your smiling story.

  Different homework can help different leveled students master the lesson better.
